Ancient civilizations, including Egypt and Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq and Kuwait), India, and China, developed and flourished in river basins. In antiquity, a famous Greek historian and geographer, Herodotus, who visited Egypt around 450 BC, wrote that Egypt is the gift of the Nile, and it's hard to disagree with that. The Nile River has played a significant role in Egypt's history, culture, and tradition. Egypt owes literally everything to the Nile, both in the past and today. You can see this for yourself on our tours.
The importance of the river is evidenced today by the fact that Egypt and Sudan are in dispute with Ethiopia, after the country built a huge dam and reservoirs on the river. Ethiopia's investments in the Nile threaten the water security of these countries and they worry that there is a risk that Egypt may be deprived of water in future years. The water from the River Nile means life and survival in African countries, so let's hope that the Nile continues to flow freely.
The beauty of the River Nile is truly breathtaking in its Egyptian stretch which you will see on our Egypt cultural tours. The route from Luxor to Aswan is one of the most scenic river routes on the planet. The Nile cruise, which is part of our tours, gives you the opportunity to see some of Egypt's most famous sites along the Nile, such as; Thebes (Luxor), the temple of Edfu, Kom Ombo and the temple of Isis in Aswan. From the ship's deck, you can also observe the everyday life of the inhabitants of villages and small towns located along the Nile, as well as the beautiful Egyptian nature. In Aswan, which is usually the end or beginning of a cruise on the Egyptian part of the Nile, you can visit a Nubian village, meet with the Nubian people and experience their way of life by visiting their homes and a local school.
