The palace was constructed in 1911 by Belgian architect Alexandre Marcel, whose works include the French Embassy in Tokyo and several projects for King Leopold II of Belgium. Inspired by Hindu temples, the impressive mansion was built at the behest of Baron Édouard Empain, a wealthy Belgian entrepreneur and amateur Egyptologist. The estate was occupied by the Baron's family until the early 1950s, after which it was abandoned and fell into disrepair.
