The wait is finally over, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) was officially inaugurated on November 1, 2025, during a grand opening ceremony led by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. Just a few days later, on November 4, 2025, the museum opened its doors to the public, marking a historic moment for Egypt and for travelers from around the world. The GEM is now fully accessible, offering an unparalleled experience of the wonders of ancient Egypt.
The museum’s exhibition spans 12 vast main halls covering 45,000 m², complemented by beautifully designed gardens, a shopping area, restaurants, the impressive Glass Lobby, the Hanging Obelisk, and the breathtaking Grand Staircase.
One of the most anticipated highlights is the complete collection from the tomb of King Tutankhamun, displayed for the first time in its entirety, more than 5,000 artifacts, including golden mask, beds, thrones, statues, and chariots, all discovered in the boy king’s tomb in Luxor. Visitors can also admire treasures from every era of Egyptian history, from the pre-dynastic period to the Greco-Roman era, presented through three main themes of ancient Egyptian civilization: kingship, society, and beliefs.
Altogether, the museum showcases over 100,000 artifacts. Exhibits are arranged by dynasty and historical order, offering a comprehensive journey through Egypt’s extraordinary past.
Located on the Giza Plateau, just two kilometers from the Great Pyramids of Giza, the museum is connected to the pyramid complex by a 500-meter-wide promenade. The surrounding area has been fully revitalized, featuring modern access roads, landscaped public spaces, and state-of-the-art visitor facilities, ensuring a seamless and memorable experience.
The Grand Egyptian Museum combines Egypt’s ancient splendor with cutting-edge technology, including virtual reality exhibits, interactive touchscreens, and full accessibility features such as elevators, escalators, and audio descriptions for visitors with visual impairments. It is not only a cultural treasure but also one of the most inclusive and modern museums in the world.
Construction of the museum began in 2005, with total costs exceeding $1.5 billion, including a significant contribution from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
