The long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum finally opened its doors to the public with a partial soft opening! It was the moment everyone had been waiting for, and it happened on October 16, 2024.
The exhibition features 12 large main halls covering a total area of 45,000 m², along with gardens, a shopping area, a restaurant, the Glass Lobby, the Hanging Obelisk, and the Grand Staircase.
Unfortunately, the halls showcasing the extraordinary collection from the tomb of Tutankhamun in Luxor, which includes over 5,000 artifacts such as three beds, a statue, and a throne made of gold, will not be open to guests. According to the Grand Egyptian Museum’s website and administration, these halls will be accessible to visitors only after the official opening of the GEM, which will be conducted by the President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
The rooms open to visitors contain artifacts from the period from the pre-dynastic era to the Greco-Roman era. The exhibition's presentation focuses on three main themes of ancient Egyptian civilization: "kingship," "society," and "beliefs", each of which is divided into four groups of periods. All rooms are organized by dynasty and historical order. The Grand Egyptian Museum currently presents 64,000 artifacts to visitors.
The Grand Egyptian Museum is located just two kilometers from the famous Pyramids of Giza. The implementation of a special promenade, approximately 500 meters wide, is nearing completion, allowing visitors to the GEM to walk to the area of the Pyramids. Work related to the revitalization of adjacent areas, access roads, and the museum itself is also close to completion. The GEM spans an area exceeding 500,000 m², making it the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization. Over 100,000 artifacts will be housed here. The main attractions of the museum include an exhibition of the complete collection from the tomb of King Tutankhamun, as well as the collection of Solar Boats. In addition to "classic" statues, sculptures, and mummies, the GEM is equipped with the latest technologies, including virtual reality and touch screens. Accessibility features for people with disabilities include escalators and elevators, as well as audio descriptions for individuals with visual impairments.
Construction of the Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza Pyramids began in 2005. The cost of all investments related to the construction of this newest museum in Cairo exceeded one and a half billion dollars, with one billion of that amount coming from loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
