The Unfinished obelisk is located in a quarry in Aswan. The obelisk played a major role as a sacred symbol of the cult of the sun in the temples of Ra.
Built during the reign of Hatshepsut, the queen of Thutmose II, it would have been the largest and heaviest obelisk in ancient Egypt. Its initial size was supposed to be 42 metres in height, weighing approximately 1200 tons. Unfortunately, during the construction, some cracks appeared and that was likely to be the reason behind why it was not completed.
The obelisk carries some visible marks on its surface which provide us with important information about the stone carving techniques used in ancient Egypt.
