The Mena House Hotel in Cairo has been in existence since 1869. The hotel is located in the heart of Giza district, at the footsteps of pyramids. It is one of the most frequently visited hotels in the world. The hotel is composed of two parts: historical – Palace Wing and newer one - Garden Wing, where rooms have the garden or pyramids view.
Since its very beginning the hotel played the host to Heads of States, politicians, artists, writers, singers, actors, sportsmen and celebrities from all around the world.
In Wing Palace, there are other suits, which were named after famous guests. There is Jim Carter’s suit- the president of United States, Sir Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery’s suit- a British military commander from World War Second times, and the suit of Swedish king Gustaf VI Adolf.
Charlie Chaplin, Arthur Conan Doyle, Julio Iglesias, Gloria Gaynor, Frank Sinatra, Roger Moore, Richard Nixon, Jane Fonda, Elizabeth Taylor, Sarah Bernhardt, Bill Clinton, Barbara Bush, Barrack Obama, Bryan Adams, Kyle Minogue, Lionel Messi, Angela Merkel and Will Smith were among guests in the hotel.
This is the place where history was written. In November 1943 the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Winston Churchill, president of USA- Delano Roosevelt and Chinese general Chiang Kai-Shek, have met to make a decision about the positions of allies towards Japan. In the older part of hotel, hall walls are embellished with historic pictures which commemorate the meeting from 1943.
It’s worth mentioning that until this day, in the part of Palace, there is Winston Churchill’s suit. This is one of the best and the most expensive suit in the entire hotel.
A great literature was born in the Mena House Hotel. English writer, Agatha Christie, has created there her criminal masterpieces while on her visit to Egypt to accompany her husband Max Mallowan during his archeological work in Egypt.
Back in 1956, actor Charlton Heston and director Cecil B. DeMille along with the film crew stayed in the hotel for 3 months. It happened during the making of the movie “The Ten Commandments”
In 1979 Mena House was chosen as the venue for the Egypt-Israel talks, following president of Egypt Anwar Sadat's peace initiative. Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin occupied suite 908, while President of the United States Jimmy Carter was in Churchill Suite and Sadat in the Montgomery Suite. The hotel was fully closed for the public and open only to delegates.
Today The Mena House is one of the known hotels in Cairo and Egypt. It stands out among other hotels - beside impressive history- for not only magnificent interior design but also the very close neighborhood of pyramids which you can watch from many windows and hotel balconies, as well as restaurant and the colorful beautiful garden.
